Traffic Camera Citation Information

General Information

Traffic camera violations are issued via regular mail and carry a civil penalty, meaning the violation amounts to a civil fine only. You will NOT receive a traffic conviction and points will NOT be reported to the BMV.

Your Rights Upon Receiving a Traffic Camera Citation

Upon receiving your traffic camera citation in the mail, you should timely exercise one of three options detailed below and outlined on the back of your citation. A failure to timely take take one of the three actions below within thirty (30) days of your receipt may constitute an admission of liability, waiver of your rights to contest the violation, and may result in civil judgment being entered against you. If civil judgment is entered against you and the fine remains unpaid, the Village of Peninsula may take legal action in an attempt to collect on the debt owed.

Your options upon receiving a traffic camera citation:

  1. Pay the Fine: Within thirty (30) days of receipt, you may pay the fine listed on the citation in person at the Court with cash, personal check, money order or credit card (we do not accept American Express) during normal operating hours. You may also pay online with a credit card (you should search for your case by entering your first and last name, or company name in the search field). Finally, you may also mail a personal check or money order (do not mail cash) to the court, along with the remittance slip on the back of your citation. Please make sure to print your full name (or name of company) and citation number in the memo line of the check.
  2. File a Transfer of Liability Form: If you were not driving the vehicle registered to you at the time of the citation or if your vehicle or plates were stolen, you may file a Transfer of Liability form within thirty (30) days of receiving the ticket. You should fill out the Affidavit portion on the back of your ticket with the name and address of the driver responsible and have the form notarized. If you lost your ticket, you may access a blank fillable form here. If your vehicle or plates were stolen, you must include the police report documenting the crime with your notarized transfer of liability affidavit.

If your transfer of liability form is accepted, the Court will notify the Village of Peninsula and a new citation will be issued to the person listed in your affidavit. That individual will then be listed as a second defendant to the case. If the second defendant successfully contests the citation, you may still be held liable for the fine amount so you should continue to monitor the case here until you are dismissed from the case or judgment is entered for you or for the Village.

You may file the Transfer of Liability Affidavit in one of the following manners listed below.
  3. File a Request for Hearing to Contest the Citation: If you would like to contest the citation you may file a Request for Hearing before the court within thirty (30) days of receiving the ticket. A failure to timely file your request for a hearing, may constitute an admission of liability and waiver of your opportunity to contest the charge. You should fully fill out the “Option 3” of the form portion on the back of your ticket. If you lost your ticket, you may access a blank fillable form here.

The Court will send you notice for your hearing date and time via regular US mail or E-Mail, if you listed your E-Mail address on the hearing request form filed with the Court. You should continue to monitor the case online here for the latest updates on the case until the case is dismissed or judgement is entered against you or against the Village. (You should search for your case by either your full name, company name, or case number. Citation number queries will not bring up traffic camera cases).

You may file your Request for Hearing in one of the following manners listed below.
